ABOUT FREEANA

Freeana is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music where she majored in viola performance and minored in saxophone. She was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic while still a student and toured with them, playing at various venues including Carnegie Hall. After graduation she wanted to explore the music inside of her. In support of this she committed much time to writing and improvising freely for many years. She explored other instruments such as the recorder, voice, keyboard and dumbek. Her music encompasses a range of ritual sounds to beautiful melodies with sensitive lyrics to catchy instrumentals.

On “A Woman’s Chant,” her debut CD, Freeana has also created a language all her own, that speaks in syllables and where the words don’t matter; it is the underlying emotion and essence that springs forth and provides meaning.

Freeana sings (or rather chants) right from heaven, calming and soothing, but also touching. You will like her peaceful style, rich with voice harmonies sung by herself, ethereal melodies, and an accompaniment consisting of synthesized textures, percussion instruments and her alto recorder.

There is something about the lilting quality of Freeana on this album that brings solace, harmony and balance to the listener, as if saying there truly is peace and tranquility in the world. It is a beautiful masterpiece done up in a style that is purely and solely, Freeana.

Her music is without a doubt, a gift of the spirit, and her kindred soul seems to permeate her music.

What’s truly unique here is that the music of Freeana, while pleasing and universal to a wide audience, somehow escapes commercialism or banality. It speaks deeply, quietly and beautifully to anyone who will listen. Her instrumental, composition, and vocal talents are amazing. If you want something to help you slow your world down for a few minutes, put in this album, sit down, close your eyes and listen!

If we consider music as an union of melody, harmony, rhythm and timbre, “A Woman’s Chant,” very interestingly exults the total beauty of those parameters. The calm almost healing powers of the music contained in the 8-tracks which make up this album, is a comfort to the soul and a lift to the sprit. No matter how trying the day may be for you, a listen to these tracks will be a respite from stress. Freeana will recenter your mind and refresh your outlook.

Not only does she write, compose, and perform her own work; she does it with great feeling and a real sense of peaceful, refreshing music that we so desperately need in these turbulent times. I would whole-heartedly recommend her music to anyone wishing to experience a calm like none before! Tracks from, “A Woman’s Chant” have also been featured on WBZC radio in Boston.

However “A Woman’s Chant,” is more than just relaxing music. Each song is an individual experience, yet they flow together in a way that is so right you will never want to listen to this in ‘shuffle mode’. Majestic, ethereal, celestial; from “Namekay” to “Zoomeywah”, Freeana touches the heart of the listener.
